Juicy Hamburger Steak in Rich Onion Gravy

Ingredients :

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions : 

  1. Prepare the patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper until well combined. Shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.
  2. Sear the patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the onion gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a roux.
  4. Simmer the gravy: Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, ensuring no lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Combine and serve: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Simmer for 10-12 minutes until cooked through. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice.
